CHAPTER 17
Happy Hunting Grounds
The “hunting grounds” for single men and women in Japan today—as well as for those who are married and still on the make—are not that different from those in the United States and other Western countries.
They include the usual places where males meet females— in school, at work, at outings of various kinds especially when groups are involved, through introductions from friends, at night clubs and other entertainment facilities, at cafes, and so on.
And just as in other countries, and over and above introductions, most relationships begin with males taking the initiative in meeting women whom they find attractive and going through the usual steps in establishing a relationship with those who are receptive.
Japanese women, like most women everywhere, are naturally skilled in letting men know they are interested and approachable. When Japanese women are not interested in particular men, they are equally skilled at ignoring them.
What makes the male-female game in Japan especially interesting and exciting for foreign males is not only the already mentioned exotic and seductive elements that are involved in the appearance and behavior of young Japanese women.
There is also the sensual wearing apparel favored by girls and young women, the fact that typical young girls and women are always well-groomed when they are out in public, and finally because there are so many of them in a very limited space.
Standing in one spot in one of Japan’s thousands of entertainment and shopping districts, or in front of one of the dozens of thousands of busy commuter train stations, the stream of attractive young women going by is virtually endless.
There are, however, particular places in Tokyo and other Japanese cities where girl-watching is unsurpassed. The foreign male is not likely to meet any of these passing girls unless he is especially aggressive, but it will certainly whet his appetite.
Here are just a few of the more popular places in Tokyo where single girls and young women flock in large numbers:
1) The Ginza. This famous shopping, dining and entertainment district in downtown Tokyo attracts as many as a million people during the course of a single day and evening. Its boutiques and restaurants are a mecca for large numbers of the most stylishly dressed and attractive women in the city. The combined shopping/entertainment district boasts one of the largest collections of high-class bars, cabarets, and restaurants in all of Japan and is priced accordingly. This is one of the places that upper-echelon businessmen and politicians on expense accounts go to power drink and look for playmates.
2) Hibiya/Yurakucho (He-be-yah/Yuu-rah-kuu-choh). The attractions in these two small areas, which adjoin the Ginza on the west side, include an amazing selection of shops, restaurants, karaoke lounges, ballroom dance halls, pubs, cinemas, and the famous Takarazuka Theater which features all-girl revues that attract long lines of young girls waiting to get into the theater or to get the autographs of their favorite female performers.
3) Roppongi (Rope-pong-ghee). This is the favorite nighttime hangout of single men and women who are
